Terrorism and Travel: Should You Still Travel in 2020?

January 9, 2018

Ha Giang Loop Drone Crash

This last year has been one thing after the other in regards to terrorism, and imminent war. Every time I turn on the TV, or even scroll through my Facebook News Feed, I see something about ISIS, North Korea, or Trump. The fear-mongering is unbelievable, and I’m over it. I’m angry that we live in a world that has become so violent we’re afraid to explore it. It’s important to be informed, but it’s just as important to prioritize your happiness.

Here’s the Deal: Terrorism is Real

Every time I turn on the news, I get filled with so much doubt. What if I travel and my plane is hijacked? Or what if I’m exploring the Giza pyramids on the day ISIS decides to bomb them. Seeing the pyramids of Giza, floating on the Dead Sea, and visiting the Holy City of Jerusalem are all things on my bucket list. Thought after thought convinced me that I shouldn’t travel, even though it’s the one thing I’ve dreamt about my entire life. I had become so afraid of death that I almost decided to stop living!

I’m sorry to be this blunt, but you’re going to die. You can cry, scream, and hide from it your entire life, but it’s going to happen. I don’t mean to be morbid, but I want to wake you up. If you allow the fear of death, and terrorism to dominate your life, you have already let them kill you. You’ve let the kill your dreams, your hopes, your aspirations, and your peace. Is that what you want?  You could have spent your whole life avoiding large, fun gatherings like the Super Bowl, or the World Cup and still die in a car accident tomorrow. Is living the “safe” life, worth living a boring and unfulfilled life?

Disclaimer

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying go book a flight to Aleppo, or take a long vacation in Afghanistan. I’m saying don’t be afraid to go out there and live. No matter how cautious we try to be, we simply don’t know what tomorrow has in store us. Don’t let the scary world we live in now be the reason why you don’t do the things you love. Be thankful that we have brave men and women fighting to protect the freedoms we have in this country. If you let it stop you, the terrorists have won. Tell me your thoughts below!

P.S: Before you travel, make sure you check out the State Department’s Travel Advisories page and stay informed!
