Best Things to do in Ao Nang Krabi Thailand

Things to Do in Ao Nang Krabi Ultimate Guide

Are you considering visiting Krabi, Thailand and looking for the best things to do in Ao Nang? You’ve come to the right place! Ao Nang is a  beach village located in the south west coastline of Thailand. It’s famous for many reasons, but most notably it’s towering limestone cliffs, easy access to island hopping in Krabi, and jaw-dropping beachfront sunset. Since our first visit in 2018, we’ve traveled here over 6 times, and finally moved here in January of 2022. Because of this, I often get asked what are the things to do in Ao Nang Krabi.

So, let’s escape to the breathtaking Krabi province in Southeast Asia and experience the freedom of exploring one of Thailand’s most beautiful destinations. With its world-renowned Ao Nang beach, you’ll be surrounded by stunning limestone cliffs, crystal clear water, and diverse flora and fauna. Immerse yourself in Thai culture as you discover all the exciting things to see and do in Ao Nang.

Things to do in Ao Nang Krabi Thailand

Whether you’re looking for adventurous things to do in Ao Nang, relaxation, or a little bit of both, there are endless options for tours and activities in Ao nang. From world-class rock climbing opportunities, to island-dotted beaches, to some of the best hotels for accommodation in Krabi, there is no shortage of delightful experiences to be had here. In this article, I will help you make the most of your holiday escape to Ao Nang, Krabi and create unforgettable memories with your loved ones.

Go Shopping on the AoNang Walking Street

The heart of Aonang is located on the Aonang Walking street. Directly on the beachfront, there is a small road full of shops and restaurants where you can buy Thailand souvenirs, and eat delicious food. What makes this road unique is that it is all right across from an unobstructed view of the sea, and islands silhouetted in the distance. Though the street is relatively small in comparison to some of the other markets, it is densely packed with boutiques selling a wide variety of handmade items.

Monkey Trail Ao Nang

The Monkey Trail in Ao Nang, Thailand is a short but popular hike that takes you through a forest and up to a viewpoint with stunning views of the beach. The trail is about half a mile long (800 meters) and takes about 20 minutes to walk. Along the way, you’ll see a variety of monkeys, including long-tailed macaques, pig-tailed macaques, and crab-eating macaques.

The trail is well-maintained and easy to follow, but it can be slippery in wet weather. Wear sturdy shoes and long pants to protect yourself from the monkeys and Thailand’s other savage critter, mosquitos. This might be one of the riskier things to do in Ao Nang, but still worth seeing!

Travel Tips: Wear sturdy shoes and long pants. Do not feed the monkeys (or bring fruit if you really want to). Be respectful of the monkeys and their habitat as some can get quite aggressive. Also make sure you avoid the large alpha male monkeys as they are the most aggressive. Go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. Watch the Sunset from Aonang Beach

The sunsets in Krabi province are some of the most beautiful I’ve seen in the world – and I’ve been to 45 countries. and the seeing the sunset here is definitely the most beautiful thing to do in Aonang. Aonang beach is the perfect spot to sit on the beach and enjoy the sky turning hues of orange, red, pink, and purple.

There is plenty of seating on the elevated walking street, but if you don’t mind getting sandy, take the stairs and sit on the sand. There is plenty of space of this beach to have picnic or buy a couple of beers at the 7-11 across the street. If there is one thing you don’t miss in Aonang, let it be this sunset.

AoNang Landmark Night Market

The Aonang Landmark Night market is my favorite area of town to visit when I want to eat yummy street food, listen to live music, and sit beach-front with a Pad Thai. This bustling market has over 50 vendors selling popular items like Mango Sticky Rice, Pad Thai, Pad Ka Prao, and a Southern delicacy, Tom Yum Kung.

The beachfront seating area is also a bar where you can get a variety of mixed drinks, or local beers like Chang, Singha, and Leo. Don’t miss out on B’s Mango Sticky Rice Stall, it’s by far the best mango sticky rice in Thailand. If you happen to visit Landmark during the day, then you want to make sure you stop by Yenly Yours. This is a mango themed restaurant that is well-decorated and Instagramable.

Take a Walk Down Nopparat Thara Beach

There is nothing better than waking up to a beautiful, sunny day and taking a walk down Nopparat Thara Beach. This long beach sits along a paved walkway fully manicured with tropical plants. During the day you can take a leisurely 30 minute walk just taking in the sea breeze and enjoying the views of the Andaman sea.

In the evening time, many people including Thais and tourists alike, flock to this area to walk, have street food picnics from stalls at Aonang Landmark Night market, and enjoy live music. It’s a lively area to watch sunset from, and grab a quick bite of delicious Thai food after. Also, if you’re staying in one of the best hotels in Aonang I recommend here, you’ll be walking distance from this beautiful stretch of sand.

Visit Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park

At the end of the Noppharat Thara beachfront walk, you’ll see the start of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. This national park is located just a 20 minute walk from Aonang Beach, and is the perfect, shaded escape during the hot Thailand summer. Here you can take a picnic with your loved ones, order street food from the food stalls across the parking lot, and relax. The park also has a running trail for people visiting Aonang who want to exercise. It’s right next to the Noppharat Pier that goes to Koh Phi Phi.

Ao Nang Night Market

Ao Nang Night Market is a popular tourist destination in Krabi, Thailand. It is located in the heart of Ao Nang, just a short walk from the beach. The market is opens every day from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The market is home to a wide variety of stalls selling souvenirs, clothes, food, and drinks. There are also a number of live music performances and street performers at the market.

Ao Nang Night Market Krabi

One of the most popular things to do at Ao Nang Night Market is to try the food. There are stalls selling all sorts of Thai food, as well as international cuisine. You can find everything from Pad Thai and curry to pizza and hamburgers. The prices at Ao Nang Night Market are very reasonable. You can get a full meal for around $5 USD.

Travel Tips: Arrive early. The market gets crowded later in the evening. Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be doing a lot of walking. Bring cash. Most stalls don’t accept credit cards. Be prepared to bargain. The prices at the market are often negotiable.

Khaothong Hill

Looking for a destination that will take your breath away? Look no further than Khaothong Hill in Krabi!

Khaothong Hill is one of the best viewpoints in all of Krabi. Overlooking Phang Nga bay and just a 30 minute drive from Aonang, it’s definitely worth a visit. Khaothong Hill is a scenic café and restaurant on top of a mountain. No matter where you sit at this café, you will get spectacular views of the Andaman Sea and Phang Nga bay. And even better, the food at the café is delicious! Make sure you try their Korean Pop Chicken, and Mozzarella Cheese Balls. It’s a beautiful restaurant and it’s definitely one of the best things to do in Ao nang.

Explore AoNang’s Marine Life through Kayaking, Snorkeling, and Diving

Kayaking is one of my favorite things to do in Ao nang. Discover the stunning natural beauty of Ao Nang by renting a kayak and paddling through the mangrove forests or limestone cliffs. This is a unique way to explore the area and get some exercise while enjoying the breathtaking scenery. Join a snorkeling tour to explore the beautiful coral reefs and witness the diverse marine life that inhabit the Andaman Sea. Swim alongside colorful fishes, octopuses, turtles, and other fascinating creatures that call these waters home.

Kayaking Activity Krabi

For more experienced adventurers, take a diving course or enjoy a guided dive to discover the rich biodiversity of the Andaman Sea. Several reputable diving schools in AoNang offer unforgettable experiences for divers of all levels, with opportunities to explore underwater caves, spot rare and exotic species, and marvel at the vibrant colors of the coral and reef. Since snorkeling is one of the best things to do in Ao nang, below you’ll see several highly rated snorkeling tours available from here!

Go Kayaking in Klong Root

Klong Root is one of the best places to kayak in Krabi, and is just a short 20 minute drive from Ao nang Beach. With crystal clear emerald green waters, you will be completely absorbed Krabi’s nature. The kayak rental will cost you ฿300, and it’s totally fine if you want to go solo, as a couple, or even if three people want to share. Now, if you feel like having a guide, it’s just an additional ฿100. Don’t worry about any limitations on kayaking and exploring. You can decide to take the guide for the first round, and then explore on your own after.

Travel Tips: They only accept cash. No credit cards, sorry!

Visit Din Daeng Doi

Let me tell you, the view from Din Daeng Doi is absolutely breathtaking! It costs 50 baht to enter, and the drinks at the top are 60 baht. The hike to the top is a breeze, even if you’re wearing flip flops, and it only takes about 15 minutes. It’s suitable for everyone except the elderly. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with an amazing panorama. There’s a small café up there where you can grab some drinks and snacks. You’ll also find shaded areas where you can relax and enjoy the view while having a meal or a refreshing beverage.

Travel Tips: The toilets are clean, so no worries there. There’s also a shaded parking area available.

Railay Beach Krabi

With glistening waters stretching out to the horizon and imposing limestone cliffs towering above, Railay Beach in southern Thailand is a sight to see. Set in the idyllic region between Krabi Town and Ao Nang, Railay Beach boasts one of the most stunning beaches in the country, if not the world. And it’s not just the picturesque landscape that attracts visitors. Railay Beach also offers a plethora of activities to keep travelers entertained. For those seeking an adventure, rock climbing is a must-try experience, offering a unique vantage point to take in the panoramic views of the Andaman Sea.

Railay-beach-View Krabi

Railay Beach is a stunning destination divided into east and west. While the east is mainly covered with mangroves, Railay West offers fine sands that lead you into the ocean for a swim. Though the tides can be low, required swimming a few meters offshore provides an opportunity for deeper immersion. Whether you’re seeking relaxation or outdoor pursuits, Railay Beach is a must-visit destination.

Travel Tips: Railay Beach has uneven terrain, so it’s recommended to wear appropriate footwear such as sandals or water shoes. If you plan to do rock climbing, consider bringing climbing shoes or renting them on-site.

Take the Famous 4 Island Tour from Ao Nang, Krabi

The 4 Islands Tour is perhaps one of the most popular tours in Krabi, and for good reason. It traverses the Andaman Sea, taking you to some of the most iconic landmarks in the region. One of the must-see islands is Ko Kai, also referred to as the Chicken Island due to its peculiar-shaped mountain top that resembles a chicken’s head. This natural wonder is a sight to behold, and is a hotspot for photographers.

Another stunning spot on the itinerary is Ko Poda. Known for its crystal clear turquoise waters, this island also boasts a famous rock formation that can be seen on travel postcards and tourism brochures. Don’t miss the opportunity to snap some photos with this picturesque backdrop. You can also indulge in some snorkeling in the area, and discover the vibrant marine life that calls these waters home.

Travel Tips: Carry a water bottle and stay hydrated throughout the tour. The Thai heat is scorching during high season. It’s essential to drink plenty of water, especially when spending time under the sun and engaging in water activities. I always travel with a refillable water bottle like this one.

For low tide tours, you can walk on the narrow strap of sands that connects the tiny islands of Ko Mor and Koh Thap. Exploring these two islands on foot will give you a unique perspective of the surrounding beauty and allow you to appreciate nature’s intricate work.

Since the four island tour is the most famous and island hopping is one of the best things to do in Ao Nang, below are some of the best island hopping tours out of Ao Nang, Krabi, Thailand!

Take a Day Trip to the Phi Phi Islands

Koh Phi Phi is the type of destination that every travel guide should recommend. From the moment you step onto this picturesque archipelago, you’re greeted by stunning turquoise waters and calming ocean sounds. And of course, Maya Bay, the most famous attraction as it was featured in the hit movie “The Beach.”

This beach is the epitome of paradise with its clear blue waters and enchanting scenery. As you lounge on the beach, you’ll hear the sound of longtail boats and snorkel activities nearby – a sign of the many adventures waiting for you. Whether you’re a beach lover or simply seeking a unique travel experience, Koh Phi Phi is a destination that will leave you in awe.

Travel Tips: Some parts of the beaches on Koh Phi Phi can be affected by tides. Be cautious when swimming and follow any warning signs provided by the local authorities. Also, there are ATMs on the islands, they may run out of cash during peak times. It’s a good idea to carry enough cash for your stay and activities.

Visit Koh Hong Island

Nestled in the Andaman Sea, Koh Hong is a breathtaking island that has yet to be fully discovered by tourists. Perhaps it is due to the fact that it is a hidden gem – a peaceful paradise that has remained relatively untouched by the masses. The island’s crystal-clear waters and the softest, whitest sand imaginable make it an ideal spot for sunbathing and swimming.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try kayaking around the cove to catch a glimpse of the natural lagoon. But Koh Hong doesn’t only boast stunning scenery. Its marine life is equally impressive, and the hot springs provide a unique experience for all visitors. And, most importantly, drinking water is accessible, so you can revel in the beauty of the island without a care in the world. It’s no wonder the Thai people have kept this secret for so long – it’s a slice of paradise waiting to be discovered. Check the prices for the best Hong Island Tour here.

Travel Tips: Take precautions for your safety while exploring Koh Hong. Be mindful of slippery rocks, follow any safety instructions given by the tour operators, and be aware of your swimming abilities in the open water.

Phang Nga Bay

Are you a James Bond fan looking for an adventure? Pack your bags and head to Phang Nga to experience the one-of-a-kind James Bond Island. This remarkable island is one of the most photographed attractions in Thailand, and for good reason! Koh Tapu, also known as James Bond Island, had its moment of fame in the 007 movie “The Man with the Golden Gun.”

The island is a true testament to natural beauty and is just one of the many incredible spots to visit in the entire area. While in Krabi, you won’t want to miss visiting the hot springs or checking out the distinct Thai architecture of the local houses. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to experience something truly amazing!

Travel Tips: Consider visiting Phang Nga Bay early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. This will allow you to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the bay with fewer tourists

Mandatory Health Insurance

Regardless of the danger, travel insurance is just the responsible thing to do when you’re investing thousands of dollars on a trip. But especially if you’re going to be doing boat trips, hikes, or any of the amazing adventure activities Thailand has to offer: Get insurance. We have used SafetyWing to cover our travels the last 3 years and are very happy with their service. But even if you don’t get the one we recommend, don’t leave your country without getting travel insurance.

Phra Nang Cave Beach

Hidden away in the Krabi province, Phra Nang Cave Beach is a true gem waiting to be discovered. Its crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches are picturesque, but it’s the Phra Nang Cave that sets this beach apart. Legend has it that the cave is home to a mythical sea princess, making it a sacred site.

Phra Nang Cave Beach Krabi

You can explore the offerings left by locals and witness true mystical beauty. Take a longtail boats to get to this secluded beach, or walk through caves where you can bask in the sun and absorb the energy of the cave.

Travel Tips: Bring your snorkeling gear or rent it on-site to explore the underwater world around Phra Nang Cave Beach. You can find colorful coral reefs and various marine life, so take the opportunity to snorkel and admire the beauty beneath the water’s surface.

Krabi’s natural beauty reigns supreme, and there is no shortage of things to do in Ao Nang. Whether you’re an adventure seeker, a beach bum, or just interested in the area’s history and culture, there’s something for everyone.
